Edibles And Exotics, is currently a back yard tropical and exotic plant nursery that specializes in selling fruiting plants and trees. We have been in business since 2020 but the owner Kurt has been growing and propagating plants and trees his entire life. The plant nursery started out as a typical Arizona yard with a pool, crushed rock, tons of concrete, and absolutely no shade! In just a few short years the pool, rock, and concrete were removed and a food forest was planted. There are over 100 tropical and exotic fruiting plants and trees now growing on the property. These plants are used for food production and also to propagate and spread the joy! Recently we started a youtube channel geared towards, how to videos, traveling to different locations to show permaculture in action, and also informative videos about how to grow plants and how they grow in their natural environment and why you should try and replicate those conditions. We are currently in talks with a local charity in apache junction Arizona that is looking for a 1 acre food forest install to help feed their portions. We plan on donating as many plants as we have on hand to give them a huge variety of healthy fruit all year long! We will be installing swales, harvesting storm water runoff, mulching heavily, and and recycling as much free stuff as we can as the build goes along. If you are interested in something similar feel free to contact us. Our YouTube channel is https://youtube.com/@edibles_and_exotics

was created to fill the niche for fruit growers gardening in Zones 7-9. This unique climate holds the possibility of growing one of the widest ranges of fruits in the world. This unique belt of land that hugs the lower 48 truly is the Garden of Eden. We have warm enough winters to grow tropical fruits, like citrus, bananas and figs, and cool enough winters to produce the temperate fruits, such as apples, peaches, pears and blueberries. Most of this is possible as a resultof the fruit breeding programs at the various universities throughout the region. Their work has produced fruit varieties that will thrive in our climate of warm, short winters and hot, humid summers.

Fruit and nut trees for the South, spec. in muscadines and scuppernongs (over 40 var.) Since our grandfather planted the first muscadine vine in 1934, the Ison family has enjoyed a long relationship with the muscadine grape. What started out as a modest 3 acre vineyard has evolved into more than 40 acres of vineyard and a nursery offering over 200 varieties of fruit, nut and berry plants. In the late 1960’s, our dad Bill Ison and Dr. B.O. Fry began breeding muscadines in order to improve size, taste and production. From the fruits of their labor we now have 22 patented varieties of muscadine! These varieties are considered the best for commercial vineyards, u-pick operations, and the back yard hobbyist.

The North American Fruit Explorers
(NAFEX) is a network of individuals throughout the United States and Canada devoted to the discovery, cultivation and appreciation of superior varieties of fruits and nuts.
Founded in 1967 by a small group of pomological hobbyists, NAFEX has grown to an organization of more than 3,000 members, and is chartered as a nonprofit organization in the state of Illinois. Although the ranks of our membership include professional pomologists, nurserymen, and commercial orchardists, NAFEX members are all AMATEURS in the truest sense of the word; they are motivated by their LOVE of fine fruit. NAFEX members typically work together to help each other by sharing ideas, information, experiences, and propagating material.
We communicate with each other via our online list and POMONA, a quarterly journal assembled largely from articles submitted by the membership which is published online in the Members’ Only section of the website and in one printed issue annually. A diverse assortment of interests and approaches are represented. While many of us are involved in collecting and growing well-known fruit like apples and pears, others are specialists in so-called “minor” fruit such as mayhaws, kiwis, persimmons, and pawpaws.

Permaculture-based consulting, education and stock for today’s homesteader.
Esprí and Darren Bender-Beauregard, 1668 E CR 100 N, Paoli, IN 47454
We began Brambleberry Farm in the fall of 2003 on land that Esprí’s parents generously share with us in the beautiful hills of southern Indiana. We started out as primarily a market garden and CSA, producing (non-certified) organic produce using no-till methods, and avoiding petroleum-based machinery such as tractors and tillers, which may compact
the garden soil when over-used. While we were supporting ourselves with annual produce production we were also developing a complex food forest of perennial fruit trees and berries, which became the propagation base for our current fruit, nut, and berry nursery. Since building our strawbale house on an adjacent area of the property we have begun developing new permaculture systems around the new house. Our old garden beds have become an opportunity for a farm incubator project, and we are focusing our efforts on permaculture systems around our new house as well as a grass-fed beef operation on a neighbor’s property down the road, and our hand-crafted wooden kitchen utensil business.
Currently we are developing a 3.5 acre pasture by rotating different species of livestock through it to improve the soil with their grazing, manure, and trampling behaviors. In 2010 we planted mixed orchard rows running N-S on 60’ centers within this system to increase the yields of the given acreage once the trees mature. We have grazed sheep, pigs, chickens and geese in this system, but at the moment we are limiting the grazers to sheep and chickens (due to time restraints). We hope to have hogs in the system again by the time the orchard starts bearing, in order to clean up the fruit drops.
Education and support for homesteaders and market gardeners is a large part of our mission. We do this through affordable consulting services, internships, and tours.

This type of plant material is very different from most plants delivered through the mail that are bare rooted plants. Bare root plants are usually dug in the fall, stored all winter and shipped dormant early spring.

Food Forest Farm
is co-owned and operated in Holyoke, MA by husband and wife team, Jonathan Bates and Megan Barber. Jonathan launched Food Forest Farm in 2010 as a creative response to the “weed problem” in the edible forest garden (known as “Paradise Lot”) we co-manage with Eric (author of The Carbon Farming Solution and Paradise Lot) and Marikler Toensmeier of Perennial Solutions. For a while, Jonathan had been noticing that many of our beloved plants were reproducing like rabbits and getting weedy. Putting his “problem becomes a solution” goggles on, he began to think about selling plant propagules as a way to make our garden system even more productive - and we began to consider the possibility of our garden not just growing food, but also making us a living. Helping to get more edible forest gardens planted seemed like a beautiful solution to our excessive baby plant problem. As a result of a two-year hobby nursery experiment, spending many months rethinking the forty-hour workweek, a little human intuition, and lots of support from family and friends, Food Forest Farm was born in spring 2010.

We are located in the wilds of the northern Willamette Valley, in farm country, Canby, Oregon. Plants are our passion! Perennials are our first love, unique shrubs are a close second, ornamental grasses, always…the person who dies with the most plants wins, right? Our collection is the result of ongoing world-wide plant safaris. We propagate most of our own plants from our very own stock plants with our very own hands. There is plenty of positive energy in these plants, infused with lots of TLC and ‘up close and personal’, individual attention.

Woodlanders was founded in 1980 in Aiken, South Carolina. Since that time we have been constantly evaluating new native plants species and selections that we find or receive from friends and colleagues. We are also introducing many new plants from around the world that we find in our travels, obtain from arboreta and botanical gardens, plant hunting expeditions, and contacts in other lands. Woodlanders tends to concentrate on new plants for warm climate areas which have historically been neglected in the introduction of new ornamental plants.

We differ from most modern businesses in that our primary objective is not to make huge profits, but to provide plants we feel good about and to make an honest, simple living. Using sustainable agriculture principles, we remain small and rely mainly on our own labor. Our quality, disease-resistant plants are grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or poisonous sprays. Often our bottom line is not cost, but environmental impact. We encourage you to grow no or low spray fruits in your yard to help cut back on world pesticide use, the petroleum it takes to truck food across the country, and to foster your good health.

We are dedicated to education and promotion of the edible mushrooms as delicious, immune system-stimulating, high-protein gourmet food that can be sustainably grown in natural, renewable media. The wood digesters like shiitake and oysters can be profitably grown in fresh green logs. They help to make the forest cost-effective. Sustainable harvesting practices help preserve the health of the trees, and thereby the ecology of all our creature relations who live in the forest.
The most potent immune enhancers come from fungi, and are commonly used as adjuncts to ordinary treatment for disease in Asia. Mushrooms grown by individuals are free of pesticides and fertilizers, the highest quality food anywhere. They are an important part of the locally-grown, chemical-free food of the future. 156 Drakes Lane/PO Box 220, Summertown, TN 38483-0220, 931-964-2200

Since 1972, we have been supplying flavorful, disease resistant fruit varieties to backyard gardeners.
Raintree selects fruit varieties for flavor and ease of growing, with you the backyard gardener in mind. We have searched the world to collect the best backyard fruit varieties for you, the American gardener, as you will see as you enjoy our catalog. Check our Growers Guide for a guide to the best choices for your region.
Most mail order fruit nurseries choose their varieties for the commercial grower and since they grow many thousands of each variety, they then offer those same varieties to you.
Commercial fruit varieties, the same ones you find in the supermarkets, are grown for their uniformity of shape and color, their ability to keep in controlled storage and their high production. We frankly don't care how bright and shiny the fruit is or how well it can ship across the country. We care about how flavorful the fruit is and how easy it is for you, the backyard grower to grow.

Our primary focus is perennial edible plants, but a healthy mix of native species and pollinator attractant ornamentals are included in the regular selection.
Sustainability is a core value. This is demonstrated by our use of locally sourced components in our custom mixed peat free soil, re-use of plastic containers supplemented by back up biodegradable pots when we can't find second hand plastic pots to re-use and our reviving of a gravity flow water system to irrigate our plants without using electricity to pump water or pulling from limited reserves of underground aquifers.
